Moroccanoil Color Depositing Mask, in Various Colors, Feel Unique

I was a little skeptical about using this mask to dye my hair however it covered the vibrant color beautifully! I received this to test for Influenster and I am so in awe of the results! This only takes 7 minutes to completely transform your hair and leaving it feeling healthy and amazing!

They are the perfect alternative to semi-permanent dye, with strong color pay-off, without the long-term commitment, as well as having the benefits of a deep conditioning mask. The shade range includes, Aquamarine, Bordeaux, Platinum, Rose Gold. Although it's important to note that most shades will only show in hair that is originally medium brown to bleach blonde. There have also been two new shades recently added to the range: copper and lilac! We decided to give those - and some of the other shades - a good go and here are our thoughts...

Color: Rose Gold

I’ll be honest. Anyone that knows me, knows that I love experimenting with hair… Just not my own. So I’ve put this to the test using one of the many wigs I own, currently sitting on my ‘wardrobe’. I had previously bleached it slightly to lift the color, but I was bored so though I would give this color ago. It was always going to be hard to judge the color it would turn into, as the original color was a dark blonde/light brown. Granted, the picture makes it look very red, but in real life it looks really similar to the copper with a slight red tint to it.

For full disclosure: I did leave it much on longer than the advised time of 5-7 minutes, but I just wasn’t seeing as much development as I would have liked. Perhaps if I had left it less time it would have gone more rosy. This is such a fun way of switching up my wig looks. Know that I know that it's safe, I might go for the dip dyed aquamarine next. If you see me looking like a member of the Power-puff girls in the next few weeks, mind your business please!

Color: Lilac

I've always wanted to try the pastel color hair trend, especially as I've dyed my hair pretty much every color under the sun over the years, except this one. I'm no stranger to home-dye kits, but I found this one a bit of a struggle simply because my hair is so thick and long. I tried to deposit the color evenly throughout my hair and, well, it didn't work too well. So I reserved some of the product and went over my hair again the next day – so I could see where it was patchy – which helped.

If you have a lot of hair like me, buy two tubes to ensure even coverage (and you can use any leftover product to top up your color should you wish). The shade itself is a lovely pastel lilac – this picture shows it after three washes! – and it becomes more ashy as it fades which I personally like (even though my mum says I look like Miss Havisham). Unlike other hair color products, my hair was left in great condition – it wasn't left dry or brittle but soft and nourished, just like it is after I use any of Moroccan oil's products. In short, I would definitely recommend this if you want to try out a fun hair color temporarily. Just stock up if you've got a lotta hair!

Color: Copper

I originally wanted to go straight for the Aquamarine. I love the idea of turning my hair blue. But the risk levels outweighed the curiosity to go that bold. I was a dark/mousy blonde prior to trialling this color, so it felt like a more natural transition to go for copper instead.

I ended up leaving it on for about 20-25 minutes as the 5-7 min just didn’t feel like enough time for the color to fully marinate. It did take quite a while to rinse it all out as my hair was fully saturated. I sectioned it, (not very neatly) and combed it through so it wasn’t patchy. Whilst I was rinsing it out my hair felt so soft and really luxurious and the color pay-off is phenomenal. It really does look like I used a semi permanent dye!

Color: Lilac

With heavily highlighted hair to help disguise the ever increasing grey it’s the perfect bleached base for semi permanent, wash out colors. After trying out a semi permanent pink professionally in the salon, I am now more confident to try out DIY shades at home so couldn’t resist trying the MO new lilac mask shade. It is super easy to apply like a conditioning mask - comb through clean, towel dried hair and leave for 5-7 minutes. First time I mixed with a conditioner to test the shade strength and applied all over which gave a nice subtle lilac wash that faded quickly in a couple of shampoos.

Next time I braved it neat on ends only, for this ombré effect which I love. My learning for next time are to use gloves on application as it does stain hands and always comb through for even distribution. There is some residue staining that takes a while to wash out which is why I prefer to experiment with color before my next salon appointment so I can ensure my blonde gets restored. But there’s no doubt this is a fun, quick and easy way to switch up your hair color and I’ll be returning for more.

Color: Platinum

I have recently bleached my hair, but I get bored of my hair color relatively quickly so I was happy to give this a go. Granted, I just turned blonde, so I didn’t want to do anything too drastic, and I also didn’t want a super daring hair color to be the talk of our family Christmas Dinner.

This mask feels very nourishing, but I fear the color was too similar to what I had originally, so I couldn’t see a major difference. Although it does look like it evened out the tone, for a softer and glossier platinum blonde finish. Usually, adding color to your hair is a really damaging process but this felt like a regular hair mask so next time I want to trial another color for my hair I will definitely go for a color depositing mask to test it out. Next stop, Bordeaux..
